Saturday on the Farm

I spent Saturday on a farm in Guantian (northeast of Tainan City) with Michelle and her family. A party was formed to collect the blackhorn seed that you see pictured. It is grown in water and you must wade into the water to collect the seeds that grow on the underneath side. I worked along side Ian and we gathered 1/3 of a sack. They will now take the seeds and roast them or cook them down into a porridge. Once roasted, the seeds taste sweet and starchy. You see stands (just like sweet corn stands in Indiana) for purchasing. I was curious about how they grew and so I got a real close up. It was a beautiful day for getting mucky and having fun.
