A Weekend in Historic Kinmen

Kinmen, Taiwan, is a small island just 2 km (1.6 miles) off the coast of main-land China. It still has strong ties to Fujian province in China and has been the sight of many battles between the two countries. Now that peace has been established, many of the military bunkers, battlefields and tunnels have been opened to visitors. "Locals joke that Kinmen is hollow inside--beneath all the grass and pretty flowers are mazes of bomb shelter, tunnels and military storage units." (Lonely Planet) It is a great place to visit but take heed of the signs warning of land-mines--they are real. The rest of the island is lovely with beautiful green countryside and gorgeous deserted beaches. I was able to see so much of the island over the weekend as you will see from the many pictures on the blog. It is a fascinating place and I highly recommend a visit!
